Computer and Network Services - Wireless Registration

WIRELESS REGISTRATION AND SETUP - WINDOWS XP

Wireless Requirements:
1. Laptop running either Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Mac OS 10
2. Wireless card that is 802.11b standard (see “Wireless Sites at UC” for recommended cards)

The wireless network can run on Windows 98 SE and Windows ME but is not recommended due to major complications and the instability of the operating systems.

Registration:
To register the wireless card (whether built in or external card), a MAC/Ethernet address needs to be registered. The MAC address can be found doing these following steps:

1. Insert the wireless card into the PCMCIA slot on the laptop (skip if system has built in card).
2. Install the card if not already done (InstallClient Manager is using Windows 2000).
3. Click on the Start button at the lower left of the desktop screen (Figure 1).

Figure 1

4. Click on the “Run” Line.

5. Type “cmd” in the bar. (Figure 2)

Figure 2

6. A command screen will appear. Type in “ipconfig /all” in the command line. (Figure 3)

Figure 3

7. The line that says “Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:” is where you’ll find the MAC address. Look for a line that says “Physical Address…… XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX.” The X’s represent the MAC Address. (Figure 4)

Figure 4

Once a MAC address has been obtained, it needs to be registered on the Internet by going to the website http://secure-server.uc.edu/UCit/Products/ISClient as shown in the below picture. The screen prompts for a username and password. Enter the required information. (Figure 5)

Figure 5

The next screen will be a security screen; check the box to accept the terms and click the “Accept Terms” button. (Figure 6)

Figure 6

On the following screen, click on “Wireless Registration” (Figure 7) and on the next screen (Figure 8) click on “Add Wireless Device”

Figure 7

Figure 8

This screen will allow the MAC address of the wireless card to be entered. The proper registration is XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX (colons must be between the sets of numbers). (Figure 9)

Figure 9

Click on “Save Address” and now the MAC address is registered.

Once your device is registered, click the Certificate link to download the needed certificates for WPA use.

Once downloaded, double click the certificates and click the install certificate button as in figure 9C
